Nettle

A stinging lesson in resilience.

Who am I?

Nettle: not just a weed, but the cornerstone of a thriving ecosystem! This prickly powerhouse might give you a sting, but it's a veritable buffet for the larval stages of the flamboyant Cabbage White Butterfly and the ever-hungry White Ermine Moth, a vital link in the food chain (delicious or not, depends on who you ask!). Speaking of food, Goldfinches adore the seeds, and even us humans have been known to brave the sting for a nutrient-packed soup.

Think of the Nettle patch as a bustling apartment block. While you're slapping on some Sorrel (a handy dock leaf remedy for that inevitable sting!), the Buff-tailed Bumblebee might be buzzing by, searching for early-season nectar nearby. The Common Garden Spider spins its web amidst its leaves, hoping for an aphid snack and perhaps even a Ladybird, a frequent visitor drawn to the nettle patch. So, before you curse it next time, remember the Nettle: an unsung hero of the garden, vital for biodiversity, and maybe, just maybe, a little bit misunderstood.

Expert Take

Delicious food-medicine plant in need of a little disarming.

Nettles have a somewhat hostile exterior but deep inside they are: delicious, nutritious, medicinal, and… good for making cloth – like a slightly prickly neighbor who turns out to be a darling. They also clean up soil after contamination, sucking up heavy metals and other toxins from roadsides and ex-industrial sites.

Don’t eat those nettles though… They love soil near where people live because, traditionally at least, this ground would be well manured or composted. Nettles from clean soil make umami-rich greens, broth, or tea. You can also eat them raw if you disarm those stings: watch the video to find out how!
