A styptic plant -one that stops wound bleeding, (like yarrow) due to the presence of vitamin K which starts the clotting reaction and also anti-microbial, probably due to the presence of a microscopic fungus which lives between the cells of the plant. This is the ultimate in good neighbourly relations: they are in effect part of the same organism, with the fungi protecting the plant from disease and the plant feeding the fungus. Plantain does not exist without its fungal partner, just as we humans do not exist apart from our gut microbe partners [can link to other references to gut microbes eg in salad of many things].
